The search for the best Brisbane brekky...

As a giant food lover (I just can't get enough of the stuff), and an even more giant lover of breakfast I, for some time now, have been on the search for the best breakfast in Brisbane. Armed with two like-minded, breakfast loving friends, I've traveled from the west to the east (side of Brisbane that is) and, whilst we have had some truly delicious meals, we're yet to find a place that really tantalizes our taste buds, is reasonably priced and doesn't have a waiting time of 2 hours (Gunshop Cafe I'm looking at you..). The following are the places we have tried thus far:

16th on Park
This cafe (turned 'dessert cafe') on Park Road was our regular weekend hang out for some time. That is until the service turned rather shoddy and the prices increased. They do good poached eggs, and diner number 2 (aka KJ) who enjoys mixing things up rather than going for the standard bacon and eggs, was always a big fan of their Tuscan breakfast ($13.20) - poached eggs, grilled tomato, basil salsa and rocket on toasted olive and thyme bread with a balsamic reduction. However, if you're like me and can't often go past Eggs Benedict, these guys do a good one with a nice creamy home-made Hollandaise. So I guess this was quite a good breakfast joint, but we had a lot of breakfasts here and were on the search for something new which led us too...

The Gunshop Cafe
For those not familiar with this West End hotspot, do not go on a Sunday morning at 10am unless you're happy to wait an hour an a half before being served your meal. I'm a big breakfast person and not eating til 11.30am did not please my grumbling stomach. Nevertheless, we waited in line and finally, after an hour got a table. Our waited informed us that it would be a half hour wait on food so me, starving, ordered a iced berry in the hope it would fill me up whilst I waited for my meal. I was expecting this to come out like a smoothie, maybe with a scoop of ice-cream. Instead it was a glass of milk, with some mixed berries on top and a scoop of ice-cream. It tasted like a glass of milk so I wouldn't really recommend it unless you like milk topped with a few berries.

After our half hour wait we finally had our meals in front of us. My fellow diners had ordered Toulouse sausages with sweet potato hash, a poached egg, rocket and bush tomato relish ($18.50). They were both happy with their meals and liked that it was something a bit different. I, feeling like something sweet, ordered the Canadian brioche French Toast with bacon, caramalized banana, pecans and maple syrup. It was ok but the French Toast was a bit overcooked and there were papery bits of eggy, pan bits all on the edges. But, I have had this before and it was better so maybe it was just a bad morning for Gunshop. Nevertheless, the lengthy waiting time put us of going back so next up...

Comfort at my Table
This is a little spot on Cribb Street in Milton (just off Coro) and I must say it is delightful! It is the cutest little cafe and was both warm and comforting when we escaped in there from the cyclonic win last Saturday morning (although best to book because we did have to wait for a table outside). Feeling like a good hearty brekkie we all ordered bacon and eggs ($10 / $11 for scrambled). I had the scrambled eggs which were divine. They were perfectly creamy with just the right amount of parsley and it was a huge serve! It came with a decent side of bacon, a sweet roasted tomato and toasted Ciabatta. It was a really delicious breakfast although, when we saw breakfasts coming out after ours, we were a bit annoyed we didn't order the Eggs Benedict or waffles with berries and ricotta, as both those looked amazing. We will definitely be heading back here to try out the rest of the menu. Oh and really nice coffee too.

http://www.comfortatmytable.com.au/ - don't follow too closely the menu on the website though, it's a bit different at the actual cafe.

And now I feel like I've procrastinated from studying long enough, but before I get back to that some other noteworthy spots:

Ned's: this little cafe in Yeronga does really great breakfasts. Both their big breakfast and Eggs Benedict are great, so great that I'm yet to not order them and try out the other tasty-sounding breakfast items, like Ned's Signature Eggs: Bacon, Tomato, Mushroom, Onion, Garlic, Spinach and Parmesan – tossed through creamy Scrambled Eggs – served with Toast.

Cafe One (Indro Shopping Centre): Tried out Cafe One's Eggs Benedict a few weeks ago and it was really tasty, a good creamy Hollandaise and it came served with rocket which made for a nice combination. So if you're in need of some early morning sustenance whilst out shopping check it out.

Plum (Kenmore): A bit on the expensive side (although breakfasts seem to be getting more and more exy these days) but the Eggs Benedict (ok I seriously need to start ordering something else) was good and came with a heap of wilted spinach (which I love) although make sure you go with someone you're good and comfortable with so they'll tell you if you've got spinach in your teeth (both us diners did...). They also do an absolutely delicious vanilla berry smoothie.

The Local Bean (Kenmore): quite good prices (especially when they forget to add a whole meal to your bill...), although their Hollandaise was a bit herby which I wasn't a huge fan of. But tasty home-made Hash Browns were a nice change from the deep fried frozen variety you usually get.

Sassafrass & Togninis (Milton, haven't tried Spring Hill yet): both reliably tasty, actually haven't been to Sassafras for a while, maybe that'll be the next spot we head to for weekend brunching.

And I think that brings me to the end of my recent Brisbane breakfast experiences. If you've had a great breakfast please do comment - we're always on the hunt for a new weekend brekky spot!!

Another cool place I've found for breakfast is "The Boys" in Kelvin Grove (57 Musk Ave), if it's during uni hours you can always park in the Woolies to avoid paying for parking, tell the sweet lady that lets you in that you are definitely going to shop at Woolworths, and remember to leave before 2 hours are up and you're safe. Average pricings, maybe $15 odd for breakfast, and pretty damn good each time I've gone there. They do an incredible Macadamia + Pear French Toast w/ enough maple syrup to drown a small horse, it's huge too. Rarely able to finish it. Coffee is decent, better than your average cafe, nothing to write home about. Does the trick for a hangover, that's for sure.

For Plum in Kenmore, if the owner is there (Asian guy in his 40s), try and trick him in to a conversation about wine and before you know it, your coffee could be on the house. He's a red wine nut.
