BBQ at the Story Bridge

I feel  ashamed to say it, but today was the first time I had been to the end of Kangaroo Point, in the park next to the Story Bridge. The area almost feels surreal; you've got the river and CBD in addition to the over-towering bridge almost encapsulating, but certainly separating this quiet suburban pocket (if you choose to ignore the busy Story Bridge Hotel further up the street). The ability to view the city from afar, as well as the traditional stress reliever that is the Sunday barbeque was, to say the least; an enjoyable experience.

I think it would be safe to say that most BBQs simply consist of a few snags, the occasional steak or even a few chicken skewers. After today it would be wrong for me to not recommend resisting the urge to go down to Woolworths or Coles, buying a cheap pack of snags and a white loaf and having the usual run-of-the-mill school fete fundraiser meal. Instead, head to your seafood store, buy some nice fillets of fish and a crusty cob of sourdough from the bakery next door.

On the menu today were mullet, prawns and mussels. I'd never eaten mullet before today. When I would go fishing as a youngin', I was always told mullet were not great tasting fish. However after today, I can't understand why I was fed this information?  On top of having a sweet and flavoursome taste, they cost $9.99/kg! The prawns and mussels also cost less than $15 a kilo. Between 6 guys, we could not finish the amount of seafood we got for less than a total of $30.

Eating something so simple as fish on a crusty piece of bread with some lemon or tartare sauce, beer in hand in a nice quiet park was surprisingly rewarding.

Mussels are so easy to cook and are perhaps my favourite seafood. Today we cooked them directly on the hot plate with garlic, onion, butter and some beer. Covered them on the heat for ten or so minutes and they were ready to eat. So damn tasty.

This has inspired me to change the first FARC event from a fine dining degustation to full blown picnic gastronomy!

If you need good seafood, I'd recommend Samie's Girl in Hamilton (15 Hercules St, Hamilton).

Been best place I've found so far. It also holds the title for worst website ever.
